Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announces that Iran is now a "Nuclear State." The announcement comes on the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that put the current government in place. Specifically it means Iran can and now has produced enriched Uranium suitable for use in nuclear power plants. They also claim to have the capacity to produce enriched uranium suitable for use in nuclear weapons.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls for "crippling" sanctions on Iran.
Sanctions had no effect on Saddam Hussein and they'll have no effect on Iran.
Unemployment falls to 9.7% in January in spite of a net loss of jobs as more people fall off the unemployment rolls.
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown signals some banks are supportive of a global tax.
As we told you last week on Hard Rain, health care is not dead. Pelosi is still scheming to get the House to pass the Senate bill as is. Meanwhile the President is trying to get Republicans to join him in public discussions on passing the current bills in the House and Senate. The bills none of them voted for.
Republicans are calling for dropping the current bills and starting over. Obama rejects that so far and wants to throw a few crumbs to Republicans in exchange for enough votes to pass his top legislative priority. If Republicans are smart they'll have no part of the current bills.
After railing against multi-million dollar bonuses for AIG last year, the President now says he doesn't "begrudge" bonuses for CEO's at JP Morgan Chase and Goldman Sachs. He must need some campaign contributions.
Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, John Brennan says in an op-ed that critics of the President are, "serving the goals of al-Qaeda." Jackass.
